Emergency contraception: A badly called contraceptive method

Abstract

From the medical point o view, the definition of emergency contraception or post coital contraception are the methods for avoiding pregnancy after having had an intercouse without using contraceptive or post coital protection. The rules of the game may varied. This review places its emphasis on analyzing those which combine synthetic estrogens and progestagens. These methods are spreading at an overwhelming rate throughout the world especially among young women and adolescents, and most of the time absent of any medical advice. These hormone combinations, as well as other methods, produce changes in the embryo transfer through the uterus, and also in the characteristics prevalent in the endometrium. It is there where implantation takes place. It inhibits the latter or causes the early know, the abortive effect of these pills is shown. The work also presents an ethical analysis in function of its abortive consequences; the semantic mishandling which is currently being used in promoting these methods as well as the conscientious objection which physicians involved in prescribing and administering these pills can set forth.

Médico especialista en ginecología, Doctor en Medicina por la Universidad Nacional de Rosario y Profesor Adjunto de Ginecología en la Facultad de Medicina de esa Universidad. Es, además, Jefe del Servicio de Ginecología del Hospital de Emergencias “Dr. Clemente Álvarez” en Rosario y a la vez Director de la Biblioteca del citado Hospital, así como Miembro Fundador y primer Secretario General de la Fundación del Hospital de Emergencias “Dr. Clemente Alvarez”. Ha sido fundador y presidente de la Asociación de Bioética de la Facultad de ciencias Biomédicas de la Universidad Austral, Buenos Aires, Argentina. Coordina el Comité de Ética Hospitalaria del Hospital donde ejerce su profesión y preside el Comité de Ética para las investigaciones clínicas del Centro Rosarino de Estudios Perinatales, centro de referencia de la OMS.
