Abstract

The questions What makes a good clinician? and What defines good medicine? lead to a reflection on the role of the human person as a physician in contemporary medicine. . Excellence, success, and prudence encapsulate goodness in medical practice. The concept of success in medicine summarizes the main elements of virtue bioethics in a more practical and understandable format for clinical practice. Some of these elements are explored. Between the principles of bioethics and the demand of practice lies an intermediate path of classical realism: success in medicine. This has broad implications for professionalism, medical education, and healthcare services.
