Using Virtual Tools to Initially Approach Patients with Mental Health Symptoms. A Literature Review

Abstract

Objective: To review the existing literature on the technological tools employed to virtually approach patients with mental health symptoms in order to describe the advantages, efficacy, effectiveness, and benefits of these tools. Methods: We searched Pubmed, Elsevier, UpToDate, Journal of Medical Internet Research, and Google Scholar databases, identifying a total of 58 articles that deal with the efficacy of various digital forms (such as apps, online questionnaires, text messages) of treating mental health. Results: The search yielded 58 articles; after removing duplicates, the number decreased to 50. Upon characterizing the information based on the review of full texts, we chose 30 articles to serve as a basis for the data synthesis. Conclusions: Virtual tools in mental health offer endless benefits to provide an easily accessible, inexpensive, and effective service to the population without fear that patients will be stigmatized when seeking help, as noted in the papers presented. Furthermore, digital tools used in psychiatry have been shown to be effective and safe; however, they have recently emerged, and a limited number of studies objectively demonstrate their effectiveness in this field.
