Abstract

In this planet, Holland and Belgium have been the seats of the “pilot experiment” designed to test the consequences of social acceptance of euthanasia. On those who dare to practice it, a psychological cascade effect is produced from which it is very hard to back out: respect for life is lost, as well as the autonomy of the patients and the families and, likewise, the citizens’ confidence and trust in physicians and nurses. In this article, the evolution of arguments and terms in favor of euthanasia are discussed, together with the serious difficulties met by the social authorities to control this practice. The findings and conclusions of scientific researches on the Dutch experience and other studies have led the English House of Lords to agree on the convenience of not legalizing euthanasia.
