In this paper, we analyze the users’ perception about their privacy and confidentiality in a hospital, as well as the actions of professio- nals regarding these issues. It is an exploratory and qualitative study, conducted in a general hospital in Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, with 34 users. We carried out a number of semi-structured interviews and non-participant observations with content analysis. The results were grouped in two categories: “Privacy of hospitalized users” and “Confidentiality of hospitalized users”. The respondents showed little mastery on the issues of privacy and confidentiality, while the actions of professionals cast doubt on their knowledge of these ethical issues. The importance of discussion is acknowledged and it is hoped that the results found can subsidize reflections aimed at a more ethical and humane assistance.Downloads
