Euthanasia: An expression of the culture of death

Abstract

In the article: “Euthanasia as an expression of social hedonism”, Dr, Amparo Vélez considers the pressures for a “sweet death” to be a characteristic of a culture of death, typical of today’s society, she understands the wide spread of “living testaments” (those given while dying). She presents arguments for and against euthanasia. However, she does not deal whit the philosophical and linguistic explanations of those that attack or defend euthanasia. Instead, she proposes a sociocultural hypothesis related to the proclivous tendency of today´s society regarding euthanasia.

Amparo Vélez Ramírez, Universidad de La Sabana

Sociólogo de la Universidad Santo Tomás, adelantó Estudios de Economía (sg) en la misma Universidad, especializada en Planeación y Desarrollo Socioeconómico de la misma Universidad y en Métodos y Técnicas avanzadas de Investigación aplicadas a la Educación y las Ciencias Sociales, especialización en Investigación en la UNAM de México, especializada en Bioética en la Universidad de La Sabana. Magister en Investigación y Docencia Universitaria y candidata al Doctorado en Filosofía: Pedagogía Experimental de la Universidad de Navarra. Ha colaborado con diferentes Universidades de Colombia: Actualmente dirige la oficina de Investigaciones Científicas de La Universidad de La Sabana. Es experto de la Organización de los Estados Americanos O.E.A. en Educación. Washington, D.C. Consultor en Educación de la Organización de las Naciones Unidas. PNUD. Investiga sobre "Cultura y Valores en torno al concepto de Eutanasia en Colombia". Secretario de la Revista Persona y Bioética.
