The Challenge of a Demographic Crisis: Are We Running Out of People?

Abstract

This editorial examines the sustained decline in global fertility and its demographic, social, and bioethical implications. It begins by contrasting continued growth in the world's population with the increasing prevalence of fertility rates below replacement level, a trend that contributes to population aging and the gradual decline in the proportion of younger generations. The author traces the historical roots of this phenomenon to Malthusian and neo-Malthusian thought and argues that antinatalist policies, the widespread use of contraception, and certain international approaches to population and development have contributed to the current “demographic winter.” The editorial also critically examines the role of multilateral organizations, particularly the United Nations, in areas such as sustainability, governance, reproductive rights, and global population policy. Finally, it argues that the demographic crisis requires coordinated responses at the cultural, economic, sociopolitical, environmental, and individual levels and that increasing birth rates requires strengthening families, reducing barriers to family formation and development, and fostering a culture centered on human dignity, intergenerational solidarity, and the common good.
